What is Throwing?

A spinning wheel, clay, water, some simple tools, and you. Throwing on the wheel is an ancient art form developed to make uniform symmetrical shapes, often for functional purposes.

Like most craft skills, throwing is a hard won but highly enjoyable skill to learn. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a frequent thrower there’s always something new to practise.

Beginner Throwing on the Wheel - 5 Week Evening Course July/August

Course starts Wednesday 15th July 6pm - 8pm until Wednesday 12th August

Build foundational skills in pottery by learning to make pots from start to finish with a five-week exploration of throwing on the wheel. Suitable for complete beginners, with small class sizes of three people, every student gets plenty of one-on-one teaching time as well as explore the skills developed during each two hour class. 

Over five weeks you will be guided through centering the clay, throwing pots on the wheel and trimming them to create refined forms. Away from the wheel you will discover clay preparation, handle making and slip decoration. On the fifth week students will glaze and complete work made during the course. You can select up to six pieces to be fired and glazed.

Completed pots will be collectable from my studio a few weeks after the course ends.

All materials and tools are provided, including aprons. Tea and coffee are also available.

Throwing on the Potters Wheel - Taster Workshop Saturday 11th July 10am - 12pm

Saturday 11th July 10am - 12pm

A two-hour introduction to throwing on the pottery wheel. Professional potter Lydia will guide you through the steps to create your own functional pottery on the wheel. The classes are small (4 people per class) and allow for each student to receive tuition on basic technique and form. This class is suitable for absolute beginners to more intermediate throwers; please note that we will be working slowly through basic techniques during the first hour so that everyone can get to grips with the wheel. Each student will have their own wheel and tools, plenty of clay, and an apron. 

Taster classes are an introduction to the medium of pottery and are a way to get a feel for the technique whilst making simple and playful work without worrying too much about the final result.

Students can choose one pot to be finished and glazed for them to collect at a later date.

There are refreshments provided and a bathroom in the adjoining house.

These classes are suitable for ages 16+

AKA Festival Workshop - Throwing on the Potters Wheel: Wednesday 12th August 2pm-4pm

A special throwing workshop as part of the AKA Fringe Festival 2026!
